چکیده

In recent years, portfolio approaches to solving SAT problems and CSPs have become increasingly common. There are also a number of di erent encodings for representing CSPs as SAT instances. In this paper, we leverage advances in both SAT and CSP solving to present a novel hierarchical portfolio-based approach to CSP solving, which we call Proteus, that does not rely purely on CSP solvers. Instead, it may decide that it is best to encode a CSP problem instance into SAT, selecting an appropriate encoding and a corresponding SAT solver. Our experimental evaluation used an instance of Proteus that involved four CSP solvers, three SAT encodings, and six SAT solvers, evaluated on the most challenging problem instances from the CSP solver competitions, involving global and intensional constraints. We show that signi cant performance improvements can be achieved by Proteus obtained by exploiting alternative view-points and solvers for combinatorial problem-solving.

Algorithm Portfolios Based on Cost-Sensitive Hierarchical Clustering

Different solution approaches for combinatorial problems often exhibit incomparable performance that depends on the concrete problem instance to be solved. Algorithm portfolios aim to combine the strengths of multiple algorithmic approaches by training a classifier that selects or schedules solvers dependent on the given instance. We devise a new classifier that selects solvers based on a cost-...

SATzilla-07: The Design and Analysis of an Algorithm Portfolio for SAT

It has been widely observed that there is no “dominant” SAT solver; instead, different solvers perform best on different instances. Rather than following the traditional approach of choosing the best solver for a given class of instances, we advocate making this decision online on a per-instance basis. Building on previous work, we describe a per-instance solver portfolio for SAT, SATzilla-07, ...

SATzilla: Portfolio-based Algorithm Selection for SAT

It has been widely observed that there is no single “dominant” SAT solver; instead, different solvers perform best on different instances. Building on previous work, we describe SATzilla, an automated approach for constructin...

HordeSat: A Massively Parallel Portfolio SAT Solver

A simple yet successful approach to parallel satisfiability (SAT) solving is to run several different (a portfolio of) SAT solvers on the input problem at the same time until one solver finds a solution. The SAT solvers in the portfolio can be instances of a single solver with different configuration settings. Additionally the solvers can exchange information usually in the form of clauses. In ...
